Hernia Treatment

What is Hernia
A hernia is a weakness or tear in the wall of the abdomen. When this happens a bulge of soft tissue forces its way through or between a compromised area in the muscle wall.  It can occur in men, women, and children.

There are two basic types of hernias:
1. Acquired—caused by wear and tear over time.
2. Congenital—caused at birth from a defect in the abdominal wall.

Some patients might believe that a hernia will heal itself over time, but this is not true.  I tell my patients that the best course of treatment is minimally invasive surgery, in most cases.

Symptoms
Many individuals are able to tell if they have a hernia before coming to my office. An obvious sign is a bulge under the skin in the groin.  This bulge may increase in size over time. Individuals may experience pain when lifting heavy objects, coughing, or going to the bathroom. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and heartburn.  If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should come in for an evaluation. It’s possible that you have a strained muscle and not a hernia, but let my medical team make the final determination.

Risk Factors
Obesity puts you at risk for a hernia. The excessive weight puts stress on the body, especially during exertion in work and sports. This added stress over time can lead to wear and tear in the wall of the abdomen, causing a hernia. It’s very important to manage your weight so you don’t put yourself at risk for a hernia or for many other weight-related health issues.

Treatment
As I mentioned, surgery is required to treat a hernia permanently. During the operation, I will push the distended tissue back into place and tighten the loose muscles. This is usually done by sewing the muscles together. Sometimes, a thin mesh-like piece of plastic is inserted to reinforce the abdominal wall. The incision is closed with staples or sutures.

Hernia repair is typically done in a one to two hour operation, with most of my patients leaving the hospital later that same day. In some cases, an overnight stay may be necessary before being sent home.

Laparoscopic Hernia Treatment
Newer surgical methods are less invasive than traditional open surgery to repair a hernia. Laparoscopic surgery uses three small incisions, each up to a half-inch in length, to enter the site. In open surgery a longer three-inch incision is required. A similar repair is made using a using a mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall. This procedure is done under general anesthesia. There are several advantages to laparoscopic surgery over open surgery. They are a neat, tension free repair and result in a shorter recovery time, less pain and discomfort, and a much reduced chance of infection at the surgical site.

Patients should consult with Dr. Aldoroty about the choice of surgery. Some relevant factors for consideration are your age, general health, and stage of hernial development.  Dr. Aldoroty will weigh these and other factors carefully before making a specific recommendation to you.
